Air cooled....kind-of (I'm on a roll)

Postby andyjw on Wed Jul 28, 2010 7:43 pm

OK, this one gets me. Design an air cooled engine then hang all kinds of shit in the way to block the air. HD not only puts the horn and cover blocking air flow it's in a spot where it's hard to hear. Put the damn horn out front where it can be heard. OH YEAH, I also got rid of the POS black krinkle painted cylinders/heads. I know.....it's just me.
The horn (hard to see) out front, facing forward, just above the oil cooler, and the horn can be heard the engine can B-R-E-A-T-H-E......AHHHHHHHH.

I like it too. So....... natural aluminum cases, silver-painted cylinders, and natural aluminum heads. That's just the way they came in 1952, too!

It's still an 'ironhead', just doesn't look that way. The cylinders and heads are 'Jet Hot' aluminized coated, the stuff NASCAR guys use (ed, ?) on their headers.

Out of curiosity, was it difficult to find someone to coat your cylinders and heads with aluminium?

It does sure look nice.

Hoov, there are (was?) two companies in the US that do it....some kind of patented/prioritised process. At the time I did review the 'spec' sheets....sounded good to me for the cooling aspects. The one company is 'Jet Hot Coatings' and I can't remember the other. Back then I got the info in Hot Rod Magazine, both companies advertised there. You had a choice of satin, polished, etc., etc..

EDIT: I'm brain dead! I checked my records, Jet Hot Coatings IS the other company. The one I used was High Performance Coatings.

Cool.

I don't have any current plans, but it's always nice to have info like that tucked away.

The status is exactly what you see.....the picture was taken the day I posted. I do have a 'tiny' rocker box gasket leak. This winters project along with valve stem seals????
